IMPORTANT TRENDINDICATING ELECTIONS IN UNTIED STATES

NEW YORK, Nov. 8 (Reed. 6pm).— The election of a Senator in New York State tomorrow offers a preview of the 1950 struggle for control of Congress. This election overshadows all others in nation-wide voting. New York elects a Mayor and council for a fouryears’ term. New Jersey and Virginia elect Governors. By-elections are being held to fill House of Representatives seats in one New York and one California district. Many local officials are being chosen throughout the country. The New York Senatorial contest is for a seat vacated by a Democrat, Senator Robert Wagner, who resigned earlier this year. Governor Dewey has appointed the Republican Party foreign policy expert, Mr. John Foster Dulles, to the seat until tomorrow’s election. Mr. Dulles is seeking election for the remainder of ilr. Wagner’s term, which expires in January, 1951. His Democratic opponent is a former Governor, Herbert Lehman. The American Federation of Labour and Congress of Industrial Organisations both are supporting Mr Lehman. Mr. Dulles has made President Truman’s fair deal an issue by attacking it during the campaign, contending that programme will lead to such centralisation of power in Washington as to threaten individual liberties. Mr. Lehman has campaigned in favour of President Truman’s programme and the President, in a radio address, supported Mr. Lehman. New York results are expected to indicate what the State’s trends will be in 1950 when the six years’ senatorial terms and governorship will be at stake. They may be influenced greatly by what happens in the New York City Mayor’s election, where a Democrat, Mr. William O’Dwyer, is opposed by a Republican.Uberal fusion candidate, Mr. Newbold Morris, and Representative Vito MarCantonio, an American Labour Party candidate. Democrats are expected to win the Representatives’ by-election in New York and California, made necessary by the deaths of a Democrat. Mr. Andrew Somers, and a Republican, Mr. Richard Welch, respectively.
