MRS. JACKSON BAIL AT TOP OF HER FORM IN WOMEN’S GOLF TOURNEY
INVERCARGILL, Last Night (PA). —The form of the players showed an improvement when the third round of the New Zealand women's golf championships was played at Ota Lara this morning.
Early morning rain threatened to make conditions uncomfortable, but the weather was beautifully fine when play started. Elimination of the Victorian champion, Miss B. Cheney, by the rising young Auckland player, Miss R. C. Hodges, by a margin of 5 and 4, was a feature of the play. Out in 41, Miss Hodges was 2 up at the turn. She went on strongly and was 4 up by holing a chip for a birdie two at the short 12th. and five up with a birdie four at the 426 yards 13th. Miss Hodges took the game by 5 and 4 when the 14th. hole was halved in bogey 5. The match between Miss Pat Borthwick, Australian champion, and Mrs. R. S. Fullerton Smith (Marton) produced the best golf of the morning. Out in 40 to her opponent’s 41. Miss Borthwick was 1 up at the turn. Mrs. Fullerton-Smith squared the game by running down a 15ft. putt to take the tenth hole with a birdie three to a four. Miss Borthwick drew ahead again with a bogey three to four at the short 12th. and. though stymied, won the 426 yards 13th. in 5 to 6. to be 2 up. Mrs. Fullerton-Smith got one back with a three to four at the 16th. They halved the short seventeenth in bogey 3, which placed Miss Borthwick dormie one. Both players played splendidly to the home green, Miss Borthwick taking a hard fought game by the smallest possible margin when the hole was halved in a birdie 4. Mrs. Jackson Ball (Wanganui), the reigning champion, was at the top of her form and played steadily to defeat Mrs. W. E Henely (Auckland) by 5 and 3. In an L.G.U. match played in the afternoon.
