Fined For False Tax Returns
DUNEDIN, Yesterday (PA).—Fines of £75 on each of two charges were imposed by Mr. J. D. Willis, S.M., in the Magistrate's Court this morning on Peter Stanley Georgeson, a baker, when he admitted making false returns of income. For the Crown, Mr J. B. Deaker said the deficiencies in tax payable were £658 and £221 in two years. Cheques had been drawn on the business for fictitious payments and a dummy account had been used. “If people came along voluntarily and admitted deficiencies in their returns, there would be no prosecution,” added Mr. Deaker. “If everybody paid their taxes there might possibly be a reduction in the taxation rate.”
