Lava Flow From Mt. Ngauruhoe Is Being Investigated
NEW PLYMOUTH, Last Nigfit (PA). —An investigation of the lava flow discharged by Mt. Ngauruhoe during its recent eruption is being made by the geologist to the Auckland Museum, Mr. M. T. Battey, and a member of the Geological Survey Branch of the Department ot Scientific and Industrial Research, Mr. L. R. Allen, Rotorua. They have spent four days at the Mangatepopo hut at the base of Ngauruhoe, and after a break at the week-end hav e returned there. Most of the recent lava flows from Ngauruhoe are to be found in the Mangatepopo Valley above the hut and theobject of the present visit is to map the limits of those flows. It is also the intention of the geologists to pay particular attention to the 1949 flow and to collect specimens frorn it. Low cloud and rain have caused delays, leaving some of th e work still uncompleted.
