United Beats Marist, Wanganui Cricket Champions Last Year; First Innings Win For TAB.
Both Marist And United Batsmen Fared Badly On The Day
United gained an outright win over Marist by 10 runs and T. 0.8. defeated Wanganui by 26 runs on the first innings, in the A>-st series of senior A matches conducted by the \\ ahganui Cricket Association-,• which concluded at Cook’s Cardens on Saturday. When United scored only 76 runs in their second innings, it appeared as though Marist would obtain a win. However, bowling unchanged, J. H. Felts and B. Poanauga dismissed last year’s competition winners for 54 to give I nited a well-merited win. Scores at stumps were: United 103 and 76. v. Marist 115 and 54. T. 0.8. 215. v. Wanganui 189 and 87 for eight wickets.
United’s outright win has 'liven them the lead in the championship with 5 points. T. 0.8. are next with 3 points, followed by Wanganui with 1 and Marist 0. Best performances were: Batting: R. E. Cloudy and warm weather favoured the matches a nd the threatening rain kept off until the end of the game between T. 0.8. and Wanganui, which finished at 5.45. The other game concluded before 3.30. The wicket for the United-Marist game proved difficult for the batsmen, with the ball coming through at an unpredictable height. The wicket is not up to the standard required for senior cricket. But in all fairness, the low scoring was also due to some good nowling. The No. 1 wicket was generally slow paced and the ball often hung in the air Yet there were times when the ball rose sharply.
