LAST SEASON’S CRICKET CHAMPIONS HARD PRESSED; 11-RUNWIN

Faulty calling and running between wickets, probably robbed Suburbs of registering a majox- upset in the Rangitikei cricket championship at Marton on Saturday, when last year’s champions, porewa, scraped home by the small margin of 11 runs. Suburbs early lost two good batsmen (Clougher and Monk) when trying to sneak runs, which were really not there, and they were run out by smart returns. A similar- fate awaited a later batsman. Had the batsmen been content to wait for runs, as time was immaterial, instead of endeavouring to take risky singles, the result of the match could easily have swung In Suburbs' favour. Less than three-quarters of an hour was sufficient fox 1 Old Boys to dispose of the remaining five Marton batsmen and Old Boys won an easy match by an innings a nd nine runs, Marton making only 79 in the second innings. The Hunterville-High School game was all ovex- the previous week, Hunterville winning by an innings and 32 runs. Porewa (83 and 71) defeated outright Suburbs (80 and 63) by 11 runs. Scoring was again low at Marton, the rain during the week slowing up both the outfield and wickets. Some balls kept very low and several batsmen wcr e bowled by “submarines.” HONOURS BOARD. Batting. Marshall (Porewa) not out 45 E. Henderson (Marton) 19 Bowling. B. Monk (Suburbs) . 7 for 28 L. Cockery (Old Boys) ...5 for 14 L. Chrystalf (Porewa) 3 for 7 Porewa were saved from a major collapse by a real captain’s knock by A. B. Marshall, who batted right throughout the innings and was undefeated with 45 runs. He held his end up in fine style while wickets toppled rapidly at the other, due to the inspired bowling of B. Monk, who finished up with the remarkable average of 7 fox 1 28 off 15 overs. Marshall could find no one to stay with him, the other 10 batsmen contributing only 26 runs. Porewa were all out for 71 runs, the last three wickets adding a valuable 30 runs. With three runs in arrears on the first innings, Suburbs needed 75 runs for outright victory in the ample time of 2i hours. The running between the wickets by Suburbs was very casual and five wickets were down for 19, two batsmen being run out due to good fielding by A. Fullerton-Smith at cover. Smith (15) hit lustily and with Bellis, the score mounted steadily, the former hitting a six and a four in quick succession. These two took the score to 40, and Suburbs' chances of victory increased. However, when Smith was bowled trying to hit the ball into the gasworks, and Bellis was given out 1.b.w., the end was in sight. The last wicket fell at 63. Highest scorer was Mr. “Extra” with 16. L. Chrystall, who was the main bowler in the first innings, again bowled well for Porewa, his figures being 3 for 7, giving him 8 for 23 for the match. The remaining five Marton wickets added only 25 runs against Qld Boys, with E. Henderson getting 19 before he snicked one on to his wickets. L. Cockery had impressive figured fox- the match, taking 11 wickets fox- 26. Marton were all out for 79, still nine runs short to avert an innings defeat. POREWA v. SUBURBS. Porewa (first Innings) 83.
