NO BIG DEVELOPMENTS IN US. COAL STRIKE

WASHINGTON, Nov 5 (Recd 6 pm).—There were no big developments today in the 48-day-old soft coal strike, but additional settlement officers were reported to have been made by individual steel companies to the United Steel Workers, whose members struck 36 days ago over a pensions issue. Government officials said the coal strike had reached a “critical’’ stage. Mr. John Battle, executive vicepresident of the National Coal Association, said the. current cold weather in the eastern United States would accentuate the rapid depletion of stockpiles which were “near danger point” at the beginning of November. Settlement offers in the steel strike were announced by Republic Steel — the nation’s third largest producer— Jones and Laughlin, of Pittsburgh. Ten thousand steel workers employed by Timkin Roller Bearing Company, Ohio, struck when the company refused to accept the proffered basis for the pension plan settlement. Negotiations between the Inland Steel Company and Inland and United Steel Workers were reported to have been broken off.
