CHILD FEARED DROWNED
WELLINGTON, Saturday. Police and helpers continued an intensive search today for a two-year-old child who wandered from her home at Petone at 6 p.m. on Friday, he police fear that she may have been drowned in the harbour. This morning, following a continuous search throughout .the night, the police enlisted the aid of a Wellington Aero Club plane which made lowsweeps over the water. Two whalers, manned by Navy League sea cadets under the command of Sub-Lieuten-ants J. Hayward and N. Wilson, and Petone-owned dinghies, put out from Petone beach to join the search early today. The Petone police were reinforced from Wellington and assisted by Petone and Lower Hutt Boy Scouts and Sea Scouts. Many residents have also scoured the town and environs. The missing child is Elizabeth Ellen Shannon, 2ft. 6in. in height, weighing two stone, and of a sturdy build with brown curly hair, brow’n eyes and a round, plump face. She was wearing an ivory wincyette frock and was barefooted. Her parents are Mr. and Mrs. W. T. Shannon, 45 Fjtzherbert Street, Petone. When she wandered from home, the child was with her three-year-old cousin, David Caldwell, who lives at the same address. Mr. Caldwell found his son shortly afterwards in Jackson Street, and the boy indicated that Elisabeth had gone towards the beach.
