BOWLING NOTES

Matters of interest to members of the Taihape Bowling Club were discussed at a recent committee meeting. The question of the champion of champion finalists in the singles and pairs championship being played in Wanganui, was discussed, and it was decided by the majority to play in Wanganui. Four new members’ names were placed before the committee and the action of the emergency committee in accepting sam e was confirmed. The committee will in future stress on skips and threes to insist on leads and twos being on the bank. This move will tend to keep wear and tear on the green to a minimum and prolong the life of the green through the hot season. The rules regarding “Bond’s Buttons” were brought to the notice of the committee. This matter was dealt with by the match committee and rules are now on the notice board at the pavilion. The coach was approached with a view of taking all new members weekly to show them the rudiments of green etiquette. A notice to this effect and the hours of attendance at. the pavilion will be posted on tne notice board. Those present at the meeting were Messrs A. Saba (chair), J. Bridson, W. Annear, D. Robins, D. S. Morris, V. Nicholls, A. J. Buckley and the secretary (Mr. R. Hoffer). Apologies were received from the president (Mr. W. T. May) and Mr. J. Polkinghorne. OHINGAITI GUN CLUB TROPHIES. Satisfaction with the quality of the trophies offered for competition by the Ohingaiti Gun Club was expressed by members of the Taihape Gun Club last week. “Ohingaiti always give good trophies, and for some events there are as many as five prizes,” remarked one speaker. SWIMMING BATHS PAINTED. The Taihape swimming baths have been painted a soft blue colour in readiness for the opening of the season shortly. The Borough Council is faced with the difficulty of finding a custodian and an advertisement inviting applications was published last week but at the time of writing there has been no response. After being spray-painted the baths now present an attractive appearance.

TWILIGHT SPORTS. Although marred by wet weather and a heavy track which prevented the cyclists from turning out, a good start for the season was made in the men’s running events at Thursday night’s twilight sports held under the auspices of the Taihape Amateur Athletic Club R. Jenkins, in particular, and also L. Jensen, showed good form for so early in the season in the open 880yds. 1 A truck load of soldiers from the ' Army camp at Waiouru swelled the ' number of starters considerably and ! will greatly strengthen the club when ! the season gets under way. i Results are as follows: ! Junior 100 yards Handicap. —B. Tozer 1, B. Purkin 2, A. Goddard 3. Senior 100 yards Handicap: R. Jenkins 1, P. Marshall 2, W. Dunn 3. 880 yards (open) Handicap: R. Jenkins 1, T. Hutt 2, L. Jensen 3. Discus Throw (junior button): L. J. Ashton 1. Discus Throw (senior button): S. Sinclair. PAINTING OF OVAL DOMAIN GATES. The painting of the gates at the Oval Domain last week has added to i the attractiveness of one of the best domains of any country town in N.Z. Another job requiring attention is the repainting of names on trees in the scenic reserve. In many cases the names have become so indistinct that they are now almost illegible. HONORARY RANGERS. Dealing with the question of honorary rangers at a recent meetig of the Taihape Acclimatisation Society, the president, Mr. J. H. T. Duncan, pointed out that Taihape had appointed none whatsoever until pressure had been brought to bear by the council of the Wellington Acclimatisation Society. PLUNKET STREET APPEAL. The street appeal conducted by the Taihape Plunket Society on Friday resulted, in approximately £7O being raised. The society usually undertakes a house-to-house canvass annually, out this year it was decided to hold a street day instead, and the response of the public to the appeal is regarded as highly satisfactory.
