NO UPSETS IN FIRST ROUND OF N.Z. WOMEN’S GOLF CHAMPIONSHIPS

INVERCARGILL, Last Night (P.A.) There were no upsets in the first round of play in the New Zealand women’s golf championships, played today on the Otatara. links, but the quality of golf in many matches more than satisfied those who had hoped to see the eclipse of a champion or seeded player. The weather for most of the day was ideal and the course again was perfect for championship golf. Although all the Australian visitors played golf which delighted the galleries, they did not dominate the scene as in the foursomes. The limelight was probably stolen by a young Auckland competitor, Miss Margaret Hughes, who forced the New Zealand champion. Mrs. Jackson Ball, to play at her brilliant best to survive the first round. The sinking of two long putts at the 13th and 14th was the turning point of the match.

All the Australians won with something to spare, except Miss Betty Kernot, manager of the team, who was eliminated by Miss P. Borthwick after an excellent game. Mrs. Jacobson, Auckland, and Miss Vivian. Christchurch) compelled their Australian opponents, Misses J. E. Percy and B. Cheney, respectively, to fight hard for their entry into the second round.

In a bogey round played in the afternoon. Miss Borth»'ick finished 2 up, being round in 75 to take the prize. Miss Kernot also was 2 up with a 78, and Miss Percy 1 up with 76. The best New Zealand score was Mrs. Steel. Auckland, 1 up, with 77, Results:—
