AUSTRALIA TO GET PETROL FROM FRANCE

SYDNEY, Nov. 4 (Recd. 8.55 p.m.) —The Prime Minister (Mr. Chifley) announced today from Canberra that the French Government has approved the export of two petrol cargoes to Australia, totalling 9,000,000 gallons, or 30,000 tons. He added: “The Australian Government has •been advised that at present France has only a small export trade in petrol, going principally to her own colonies. The grant of French export licences is dependent on circumstances obtaining at the time of application. The French authorities are reported to have stated that any availabilities could not form the basis of a regular export trade.” The Sydney “Sun’s” Canberra correspondent says that though the production of crude oil is a United StatesBritish monopoly, “into this hitherto tight preserve France appears to be trying to muscle. France wants to earn dollars, but also has stealing difficulties, and is not above earning sterling to finance such purchases as wool from Australia.”
