SALES TAX AND DUTY ON AUCKLAND PIPE LINE IS £3400 A MILE

AUCKLAND, Last Night (PA). —Sales tax and duty on steel to be used for a pipeline from the Hunua water development will cost the city more than £3400 a a mile, according to figures contained in a report by the tolvn clerk, Mr T. W. *M. Ashby, to the City Council. Steel plate for the first seven miles of the line is already in Auckland and the tax and duty on it amounts to £24,000. Mr. Ashby dealt with the council’s fruitless efforts to obtain a remission of tax and duty. The council decided to renew its application direct to the Minister.
