CRIPPLED CHILDREN SOCIETY HANDCRAFT COMPETITION

Tangible evidence of the accomplishments acquired as a result of encouragement by occupational therapy is seen in the display of handcrafts from crippled children in all parts of New Zealand, which has reached Wanganui Organised by the Wanganui branch of the New Zealand Crippled Children Society, the competition is open to all crippled children through any branch of the society in the Dominion, and is organised to encourage and display talent That there is considerable talent is seen in the large collection of articles which has just been judged by Mrs. W. S. N. Rennie and Miss Nancy Smith, with Miss R. Campbell as convener. Included in the collection which is to be shown in an Avenue shop window shortly and later to be displayed in Wellington, are toys of all kinds, animals made of lambs’ wool. A lamb made by a 12-year-old child is outstanding, as is also a large doll made of felt with a papier mache head—all hand made and with an artistic blending of apple green and deep cyclamen in its smart frock, bonnet and shoes. A well-made article among the wood-ware is a dressmaker’s skirt measure. A small cushion in woollen worked crossstitch is a remarkable piece of work done by a very bad case of cerebral palsy. Decorative felt work articles, knitting, felt toys of all kinds, some excellent weaving, tapestry, fancy work, handkerchiefs, book bindingsmocked garments, and a collection of leather work, an outstanding entry being a suit case, felt lined and studded with brass-headed furnishing tacks.
