PAKEHA BEAT MAORIS IN ANNUAL WANGANUI WOMEN’S HOCKEY MATCH

Saturday was a strenuous day for Wanganui women hockey players. In the morning the annual Maori v. Pakeha game was played at Gonvillc, while at Wanganui East. College A met Wairarapa College. In the after- i noon the usual club matches were | played. Results of the games were: — Pakeha 5 (I. Bartrum 3, A. Savage, M. Bott); Maori 1 (B. Peina). Wairarapa College 8, College A 2. T.O.G. White 1 (J. Liddell). Aotea 0. Collegians 4 (B. Bigncll 3, J. Barnett); T.O.G. Blue 2 (E. Cromarty). Y.W.C.A. 11 (O. Savage 4, O. Wilkie 2, L. Puklowski 2, S. Humphreys, V Dixon, A. Lash); Tech. B 0. Kiwi 10 (K. Tume 7- C. Kenny ?, B. Peina); Stewart 1 (P. Green). Tech. A 2 (M. Wallace- M. Thompson); College B 0. College A 4 (Y. Ellis 2, B. Pitkethly, R. Baird); College C 4 (J. Hounsell 2, R. Check, T. Heise). MAORI v. PAKEHA ! In the Maori-Pakeha match play iwas opened up by a fast attack from the Maori forwards, from which B. Peina scored in the first, few minutes. Play was scrappy at. first and the Maoris held the advantage in the first spell. Just before half-time P. Green (Pakeha) made a solo run but unfortunately lost, possession when tackled by P. WainhousC’ the Maori goalie. M. Bott. (Pakeha left wing) then took the ball down and shot, at goal. The ball rebounded from the goalie’s pads and M. Bott reshot to score. The score was then 1-1. I. Bartrum (Pakeha right wing) came infield and with some very tricky stick-work cut through the Maori defence to score. The half-time score was 2-1 in the Pakehas’ favour. In the second spell the Pakeha team settled down and were on the attack. O. Bartrum- playing as inner, scored soon after the commencement of the second spell and later from a runaway break scored her third goal. A. Savage scored the filth goal from a melee. B. McPhail as centre-half for Pakeha played an excellent game. The Maori forward line was strong. K. Tume played a fast attacking game and B. Peina on the wing as always there. G. Nepia, right wing, played a sound game. The match was a good forerunner of the forthcoming representative games, but for players aspiring to representative honours there was far too much obstruction and barging. CLUB MATCHES A good fast game was seen in the T.O.G. White-Aotea match. In the first half both sets of forwards combined well, but the Aotea forwards failed to keep in position in the second half. The defence play on both sides was good. For Aotea- M. >laraku (right, back), D. Heremaia (goalie), R. Hemo (left wing). G. Nepia (right wing) plsyed well. For T.O.G. White, good players were A. Liddell (right wing), H. Liddell (right half), K. Mclntyre (left half) and K. Hughes (right back). Collegians narrowly averted defeat by T.O.G. Blue, who were playing one short. In the last quarter of an hour B. Bignell made two detern*faed runs and scored. The game was played at a fast pace and the teams were evenly matched, though the Collegians’ forwards showed the better combination. E. Cromarty, right wing for T.0.G.. made some very determined runs and scored two good goals, while J. Bergeson, goalie, made some splendid saves. 01: the Collegians, B. Bignell and I. Bartrum were prominent in the forwards, while M. Rossiter, right back, played a good game. Her cover work was splendid and her defence sound. The positional play of both teams could be improved considerably. Stewart, playing short, put up a very good defence against. Kiwi; but were defeated by superior combination. B. Peina and K. Tume shone in the Kiwi forward line, while P. Green led the Stewart forwards. College A were unlucky in that they only drew with College C. Playing one short at first, and later two short, they found the C forward line, just too fast to cope with. The C team played well and their forward line is most promising. T. Heise, in particular, distributes the ball with welldirected hits to the other forwards. The experience of the Y.W.C.A. team was just too much for the Tech. B girls to handle. The schoolgirls must learn to feed the wings and halves must hit hard and cleanly. For Tech I. Laird (left wing) is a promising player, while E. Black (lelt back) was very cool in the face, of strong opposition. Of the Y.W.C.A, players- V. Dixon and S. Humphries were tireless on attack. V. Martin and N. Goffe, though not called upon to do much, were both capable. The Tech. A-College B game was even. The defence of both teams waj sound. . Warrilow. back for Tech., played a solid game, while J. Wyllie, College goalie, was called upon to save very often. Championship points to date are: Collegians 16- College A, Tech, A 13, Kiwi, T.O.G. White 11. Y.W.C.A. 10, Aotea, T.O.G. Blue 6, College B 5, Stewarts 2, Coljege C 1.
