Death Of Well Known Wanganui Bandsman; Mr. Edward Birch
The death occurred suddenly last night of Mr Edward Birch, one o£ Wanganui’s best known bandsmen. He joined the Queen Alexandra Band in 1910. coming to Wanganui from Blenheim as a young man. He has played the E flat bass in that band continuously since he joined, and was one of the most regular attenders at practices. He leaves a wife and grown-up family of one son and two daughters.
In tribute to tjie memory of the late Mr Birch, members of the band stood in silence at the practice In the bandroom last night, and as a mark of respect the practice was postponed. The conductor, Mr E. O. Schnack, paying tribute to Mr Birch's enthusiasm- said that to be a member of a band for 40 years and attend practices as regularly as he had done served to emphasise the great amount of time bandsmen devoted to their work and how much bands relied upon such men, who gave their time because ot their love for mmic and bands.
