COURTHOUSE AS POLLING BOOTH

It was reported at the last meeting of the Taihape School Committee that the school building would not be usel as a polling booth for the referendum on military conscription. Since the meeting was held arrangements have been made to use the Courthouse at Taihape for this purpose. BOROUGH COUNCIL ELECTION. The opinion that the three candidates for a seat on the Taihape Borough Council, made vacant by the resignation of Mr. W. T. May, should take the public platform and address the electors, has been suggested by a ratepayer who is keenly interested In municipal affairs. He pointed out that it used to be the custom in days gone by for the candidates to address the electors, and he thought that the practice should be revived so that the public could gain their own impressions of the candidates offering themselves for election. PERSONAL. A high tribute to the work of the retiring president of the Taihape Bowling Club, Mr. D. Morris, was paid by Mr. A. Saba, at the annual meeting on Thursday. Affter referring to the excellent service rendered by Mr Morrrs, Mr. Saba called for three cneers for the retiring president and members responded in a manner which indicated the manner in which Mr. Morris had carried out his duties during the past year. The new president, Mr. W. T. May, returning thanks for his election, said that he would do his best for the club and endeavour to maintain the hlgn standard set by Mr. Morris. Mr. J. Stead, of Inglewood, and formerly a resident of Taihape for many years, is visiting Taihape. TAIHAPE BOWLING CLUB. Trophies won last season were presented at the annual meeting of the Taihape Bowling Club on Thursday evening by the president, Mr. D. S. Morris, as'follows:—l947-48 first year cup, L. Howard: 1948-49 first year cup, A. J. Cookfi; senior championship, a. Caulcutt; intermediate championship, R. McKay; junior championship, O. C. Cardno; pairs championship, A. Caulcutt and A. P. Seccombe; full rinks championship, A. Caulcutt (s.), A. J. Buckley, C. A. Young, O. C. Car£no; percentage fours, A. P. Seccombe, W. Annear, R. Siddle, D. Robins. President’s Report. The president’s annual report read as follows: “Membership has been well maintained, subscriptions received amounting to £2OO 10s. A life policy for £lOO, wisely taken out about 10 years ago, matured in March, and proceeds, £llO 14s, were lodged to the credit of the club’s bank account. “Expenditure during the year included the purchase of four substantially built garden seats at a cost of £3l. A well constructed bitumen path was also built from the entrance gate to the pavilion, at a cost (materials only) of £lO 10s. Sincere thanks are extended to Mr. S. Daniel and to the other club members who voluntarily assisted in the construction of this valuable improvement to the grounds. The expenditure on this path is included under the heading “green expenses,” £76 9s 7d. “Funds in bank and on hand, £ll4 8s Id, show a satisfactory surplus of £64 Is 2d for the year’s working. “Thanks are again extended to Mr. P. Williams, green superintendent, and to Mr. F. Kreegher, greenkeeper, for their continued care and attention to the greens and surroundings. I also wish to thank the ladies of the Croquet Club for their assistance in providing refreshments during the season and for their attention to the garden plots. “All club competitions were keenly contested and congratulations are extended to Mr. Alf Caulcutt upon his good performance in winning three major competitions. “A highlight of the season was the visit of the Wanganui Centre to our club on March 20,. In all, 28 visitors made the trip, including the president of the centre, Mr. G. N. Boulton, and a most enjoyable occasion was fittingly concluded by a visiting rink taking home “the mutton”—a trophy generously donated by Mr. R. S. Treadwell.” Election of Officers. The election of officers resulted as follows:—Patron, Mr. A. M. Ryan; president, Mr. W. T. May; vice-presi-dents, Mr. A. Saba; secretary, Mr. R. Heffer; treasurer, Mr. D. Robins; auditon, Mr. A. M.
