Waverley-Old Boys Draw; A True Indication
The standard of football provided by Wanganui and Old Boys and Waverley was disappointing However, the closeness of the score maintained interest Though Old Boys had more opportunities a draw was the best indication of the run of play. The form shown by Old Boys did not warrant a win and Waverley tried hard all the way. Old Boys played two men who are ■ nursing leg injuries—Hunter and j Welsh. The former had a knee ban- i daged up and showed during the 1 match that he was troubled by the: injury. He should not have played. | Brightest feature of the game was 1 the good work of the country pack. Marks played impressively on the side of the scrum. Dallison gained the ball i from the majority of the scrums. However, the Old Boys side rankers were too fast for the inside backs. The Old Boys pack played sluggishly. Griflin, D. Fitchett, and a newcomer, Anderson, were the only players up to form. The Old Boys backs had a day when little seemed to go right. The Waverley backline also lacked cohesion and enterprise. The teams were:— Wanganui Old Boys: P. Bosher, G.
Smith, R. Bruce. C. Jones, K. Welsh. M. Hunter, W. Matenga, W. Anderson D. Fitchett, A. Buckley, J. Fitchett, F. Jordan: M. Griffin. L. Northover, B. Jones. W. Scott replaced D. Fitchett in the second spell. Waverley: M. Halley, P. Hughe , D. Aiken, B. Foreman, J. Rogers, S. Sturmey, G. Sturmey. G. Meads, E. Marks, D. Rukuwai, H. Newland- R. 'j Ingram. L. Hone, R. Dallison, B. i i Hone. During the match Hughes went • j to centre, Aiken to full-back, and Hal1' ley to wing three-quarter. j Referee: Mr. H. Dickie. ;l Old Boys scored first after 12 min- ■ utes of play when one of the few ■ 1 bright movements brought a try. From j a scrum just inside the Waverley half ■ Hunter obtained the ball, passed to , Welsh, who then sent it back to Hun- . ter. who cut through to the twenty- . ( five. D. Fitchett was on hand, took the , i pass, but as he crossed the line he > j dropped the ball. However, Hunter, I backing up, fell on the ball for a try. ■ j Welsh failed to convert from a handy • position. His goal kicking throughout i the match was off the mark. Waverley equalised about half-way • through the second spell when Hughes . ' Kicked a penalty from 45 yards out.
