SERIOUS EARTHQUAKE OCCURS IN TURKEY
Many Lives Are Said To Have Been Lost ANKARA, July 23 (Reed. 6pm).— A violent earthquake shook the Aegean port of Izmir and the surrounding area yesterday. It is reported that several scores of people perished. The earthquake lasted live seconds. The town of Karaburunwith a population of 7000, is reported to he thp hardest hit, with GOO houses destroyed.
i , At Izmir, the second largest, port in Turkey, with a population of 675,000. walls of buildings were blasted open Several hundred people fled from their homes and wandered aimlessly in the streets. First aid is being rushed to the stricken area, extending from Izmir to Karaburun.
