Corineus Again Takes Honours In Trentham Winter Hurdles; Robin's Reward Surprises

Several Big Dividends On Final Day Of Wellington Meeting

Winner of the Winter Hurdles at frentliam twelve months ago, the Te Awamutu-trained Corineus on Saturday again proved successful in this event, feature raee on the final day of the Wellington Racing Club’s winter meeting. Robin’s Reward returned nearly half a century* when he sprang a surprise in the Winter Oats, and the well-backed Swift Robin narrowly won the open sprint.

Though two favourites in Min- f lon and Personality were success•r ful in the opening events, and j Corineus and Swift Robin were well backed, there were several other surprises besides that in ' the Winter Oats. Little Tit ch, ’ Hakim and In Front were all at t double figures, the last-named | paying what was actually the 1 largest dividend at the meeting. Weather conditions, alter a tight 1 ,n the morning, were again ex- ■ cellem, and the track was in good or- 1 der, though heavier than on the two 1 earlier days. Another large crowd at- 1 tended and betting was brisk, the ' amount handled being £243,433 10s, 1 an increase of £21.917 10s on the final ! day s figures last year. £221,516. The 1 aggregate for the three days was 1 £647,668 10s, as against £588,068 10s [I last year, an increase of £59,600. CORINEUS WINS AGAIN 1 < Ruling Master was a warm favour- [j ite for the Winter Hurdles, with Des- j ert Trek. Detain and Corineus evenly ( backed, and it was Corineus who did ! ] best- repeating his feat of last year, h High Order made all the early run- ’ ; mng and had opened up a gap of J eight lengths running through the i straight, with French Count three ' lengths ahead of Ruling Master, fol- ■ lowed by Peria Prince, Master Ted, I Roman Duke, Conneus and Detain. ’* French Count had closed the gap a s mile from home, oeing within a length I of the pacemaker, and Corineus had > moved into third place, seven lengths away, with Ruling Master, Peria < Prince, Detain and Master Ted next < and Dawn March moving up. Corineus i continued his run to be on terms with t the leading pair at the five, and he I had a clear lead at tlte half-mile, but he was immediately challenged by I Detain, the latter running to the tront < commencing the home turn. The pair < came away in the run from the last 1 hurdle, Corineus finishing better to i win by a length and a-half. Master ■ Ted came home well for third- five i lengths back, with Dawn March fourth, and then came Roman Duke. I Peria Prince and High Order. Desert i Trek lost his rider three fences from i home, and Lord Latour and Ruling - Master were pulled up in tfie final : stages. HAKIM'S STEEPLECHASE Formerly owned in Wanganui, the i z Bulandshar gelding Hakim won the I i Matai Steeplechase to score his-first I win since he took the Waikato Hunt i Cup last spring, paying double figures, 1 with a bigger outsider in Modern View second and the each-way favourite Prize Ring third. ! In the early stages Yoking Sob and Beau Court took turns in the lead, i with Hakim near the rear. Running • for the double brush to commence the final round- Young Bob was clear of I Beau Court, with Modern View- Prize • Ring, Bravura, Hakim and Master | Play next, the field being in fairly! close order. Young Bob and Master} Play were out clear of Modern Viewl and Hakim with a mile to go, and , then Hakim moved up to take the lead before reaching the half-mile, with Modern View, Prize Ring. Master Play and Young Bob next. Hakim led Modern View. Prize Ring, Master Play into the straight, and in spite of screwing at the last fence he finished full of running to win by three lengths from Modern View, who was a similar distance ahead of Prize Ring. Then came Master Play, Young Bob, Beau Court, Imperial Crown and Ter-1 han in that order. THE WINTER OATS Revelling in the conditions, Robin’s Reward carried his 9.7 to victory in the Winter Oats to surprise all but his immediate connections, returning a win dividend of close on half a century. When the field had settled down on the journey, Mangatiti- Gildchase, Carnegie, Precedency and Sir Royal held command from Field Marshal, | Indian Song. Western Front, Conclusion, Mr Pym and Langham, with Super Flight and Titahi at the. rear as they ran past the mile. With four furlongs to go Mangatiti and Precedency led from Western Front and Carnegie. Indian Song and Field Marshal- with Titahi making a fast forward move, and Cheerful Night, Conclusion and Langham next. Titahi continued his run to join Western Front in the lead crossing the top, and the pair turned for home ahead of Indian Song, Bronstar. Cheerful | Night, Super Flight, Mangatiti, Conclusion and Robin's Reward. Titahi was in front at the furlong, with Robin’s Reward (coming through), Western Front, Indian Song, Conclusion and Super Flight also in the picture. Robin’s Reward forged ahead to win by a length from Indian Song- and Conclusion flashed up on the inner to take third money off Titahi and the fast-finishing Mission in the last few • strides. Then came Foxtonian, Western Front- Super Flight, Mr Pym and Cheerful Night. The well-backed Redingote was practically last. DESPERATE SPRINT FINISH The seven-furlong Onslow Handicap provided a desperate finish, Swift Robin getting a photo verdict over Blank Cheque and an outsider in RevellerBlank Cheque. Prince Coronach, Swift Robin and Distinction got the worst of the despatch, and smartest cut were Lord Azure, Playtos. Playboy, Celebration, Extra Flight, Lady Kindine and Tiger Tan. Blank Cheque made up his leeway smartly and at the half-mile he was following playbov. Celebration, Deprive and Tiger Tan- with Brown Derby, Prince Coronach, Lord Azure, Winning Cheer, Lady Kindinc and Playtos next. Turning for home Celebration was in front of Deprive, Prince Coronach, Tommy Gun and Magnaform. but the field fanned out and there were some rapid changes. Deprive, Brown Derby, Blank Cheque and Reveller were in the leading division at the final furlong, with Swift Robin coming from the rear. Blank Cheque was in the lead a hundred yards off the me, but Swift Robin, finishing brilliantly, got there in the Last stride, a head in front of Blank Cheque, with Reveller onlv a head away. Brown Derby was

fourth, with Leyma next and Blue Skimmers, Merry x Robin and Joe's I Cobber almost in line. MINLON’S HACK HURDLES Backed to favouritism for the Talavera Hack Hurdles- Minion stayed on too well for an outsider in Carey, who returned double figures for second place. i With a round to go Sals Pal was the leader, with General Lytup in i close attendance and Newel PostCharivari, Ernbrae, Fianna Fail, Miniion, Brockie and General Saleve next, ahead of Sailor Girl- whose rider had lost his irons, and Carey. Sal’s Pal and General Lytup were together passing the mile, but Sal’s Pal commencetito drop back and Ernbrae had joined General Lytup at the six. The pair were clear of Minion- Newel Post, Fianna Fail, Sal’s Pal and Brockie at the half-mile, with Carey still several back. On the home turn MinHon took charge and was followed into the straight by General Lytup, Fianna •Fail, Newel Post- Carey and Sailor 'Girl. Nothing “.d a chance with : Minion over the iinal stages and the Lang Bian gelding won by two lengths from Carey, with Fianna Fail four lengths back, clear of General Lytup, i Fairhome was close up- fifth, followed by Sailor Girl, Brockie and Ernbrae. PERSONALITY NARROWLY 1 Personality, back down to a short price, just got home in the Novice •Handicap from Lady Melva, whose stablemate, Balcedar, filled third place, the pair, who were not bracketed, paying well over a score each. Autocrat missed the, jump-out, the early leaders being Sad Sack, Peer Gynt, Personality. Boost, Talent. Flyiny Colours and Rising Tide. At the end of a couple of furlongs Peer Gynt had a clear lead, next being Rising Tide, Personality, Paddy Joe, Neutron. Giggle, Talent. Lady Melva and Balcedar. Personality challenged Peer Gynt on the home turn, the pair being followed by Rising Tide, Lady Melva (wide out), Autocrat, Balcedar and Felborough. Personality had no sooner asserted his claim than Lady Melva lodged a challenge, just failing by a nose to catch the favourite. Balcedar was three lengths back, ahead of Felborough and Blue Chief- with Peer Gynt, Flying Colours, Paddy Joe and Fearless Gain next to finish.

ONE FOR LITTLE TITCH Finishing fast from several places back at the home turn, Hastingstrained Little Titch came home to return more than a third of a century in the Crofton Hack Handicap, with Robin Redbreast and Sweet Revenge (at good odds) in the minor places. Though Mandeville and Virginius led early, Rokdale was in front at the half-mile, next being Roscarea, General Hope. Dunkrevin, Virginius, Oslo, 'Sweet Revenge (who had moved up I fast from the rear), Night Royal- Sillver Line, Little Titch and Robin Red- ' breast. Dunkrevin took charge crossling the top and was first in line from [Sweet Revenge, Rokdale, General Hope, Roscarea, Oslo. Robin Redbreast I and Little Titch. The field spread out at the distance and Robin Redbreast was in front at the furlong- but was run down by Little Titch, who was going away at the finish, four lengths clear. Sweet Revenge finished on solidly for third, and then came Aki Aki and Dunkrevin, next to finish being Oslo- Great Bid, General Hope, Night Royal and Snow Saint. IN FRONT TRUE TO NAME | Biggest turn-up at the meeting I came in the final event. In Front winIning at odds of more than two-thirds of a century from another outsider in Lady Finis. ; In Front and Show Boy were the . pacemakers running out of the . straight, with Roscarea, Double Bid, ; Chief Officer, The Turk. Murrayfield, ■ Lady’ Finis and Run Bahadur next and Ace Pilot and Billy Mac at the i rear. Entering the back stretch In , Front was clear, and within the next i two furlongs he had opened up a gap , | whirfi he had extended to 20 lengths ■ at the half-mile. Here Chief Officer, i Lady Finsi, Gay Fellow and Show Mist ' were at the head of a bunch, with ’ Billy Mac making up ground. In ■ Front still further increased his lead I to be 30 lengths clear commencing the • home turn, but he ran right off the ■ course to the outside fence. Lady ■ Finis, Gay Fellow. Show Mist and i Elofa were at the head of the others, i and Lady Finis actually hit the front . at the distance. However. In Front, I straightened up, came on, strongly and II was going away again at the post, • four lengths clear of Lady Finis. Elofa i was six lengths away, third, ahead of • Atomic Energy and Billy Mac, the • latter coming home fast. Next were ) Show Mist, Roscarea and Gay Fellow. ) Details of results: — 1 TALAVERA HACK HURDLES ) (Of £900; two miles). ) 1/1 —Minion, 9.9, R. Hawes 1 .’ 12/12 —Carey. 9.21, R.
