Chief Government Whip In House Of Lords Has Resigned

LONDON, July 21.—Lord Ammon, the 76-year-old chairman of the National Dock Labour Board, who called the British Government “crazy ’ when it repudiated the board’s ultimatum to the striking London dockers, today agreed to resign his two Government posts. The Prime Minister, Mr Attlee, had earlier demanded that Lord Ammon give up the posts—Chief Government Whip in the House of Lords and £l2OO a year as Captain of the Gentlemen at Arms in the Royal Household. Lord Ammon said that Mr Attlee's letter said the call for his resignation had nothing to do with his post as chairman of the Dock Labour Board. “In sending in my resignation I shall shed no tears,” Lord Ammon said. “There is no question of my resignation from the chairmanship of the board. I was appointed by the Government for a certain period, and that period has not yet expired.”
