Powers Of Commissioner To Cancel Licence Of Motor Vehicle Driver
Under the provisions of the Motor Drivers' Regulations of 1940- the Commissioner of Transport has power to cancel a driver’s licence, but the driver has the right of appeal to a magistrate. The North Island Motor Union recently discussed the subject of the cancellation of licences, usually it a motorist has a bad record of accidents, lhe general opinion being that the law placed too much power in the hands of one person. “The motorist is in the position of having to prove that he is capable of driving,” said Mr G. W. Sampson, president of the Automobile Association (Wanganui), when the question was discussed at the July executive meeting. Mr Sampson said that only one appeal by a motorist against the cancellation of his licence by the Commissioner had been upheld since the regulations were introduced ton years ago. “It is the law of the land and there is nothing wc can do about it.” he added.
