Ninetieth Birthday. The 90th. birthday of Mr. Thomas Hawken, who is an inmate of the Home of Compassion, was celebrated at the Home recently when children, grandchildren and great-grandchild-ren attended. Afternoon tea was served to all the inmates of the home by Mr. Hawken’s granddaughter, Mrs. S. G. Christian and Mrs. R. M. Spooner. Mr. Hawken, who came from Cornwall, has been a resident of New Zealand for over 30 years. Garter and Giove Pockets. An American woman with a practical turn of mind, has designed a clever pocket called the “Pocket Garter.’ Attractively designed and colourfully gay with lace, ribbon and elastic, widen conceals a folded purse that lies snug against the leg, provides a secret hiding place for money, key or trinkets. The “Pocket* Garter ’ is also made in pretty pastel shades of rubber so that the wearer may go surfing with all her most precious belongings hidden safely in her garter and secure from the water. A tiny pocket concealed in the shank of a glove is the answer to the demand on buses and trams for the correct fare. The zipped pocket lies, at the base of the wrist of the left glove and the pennies or threepenny pieces are quickly removed with the right hand.
