WANGANUI WOMEN’S HOCKEY MATCHES

Following are the results of the fourth round of the Wanganui Women’s Hockey Association matches played on Saturday:

Tech. A 11 (M. Wallace 4, B. Bott 3, H. Pairaka 2, M. Thompson 2), v. Tech. B 0; T.O.G. White - (K. Mclntyre), v. Kiwi 1 (B. Peina); Aotea 3 (G. Nepia 2, W. Brough 1), v. College B 2 (J. Thurston 1, B. Carlson 1); Collegians 2 (I. Bartrum 2), v. College C 1 (P. Clarke); College A 12 (B. Pitkethly 4, Y. Ellis 3, R. Baird 3, R. Firmin 2), v. Stewarts 1 (P. Green). Y.W.C.A. won by default from T.O.G. Blue. The best game yet played this season was the T.O.G. White-Kiwi match. It Was fast and open, with plenty of hard hitting, cross-field passing and good combination. T.O.G. were two short, but M. Sutherland, in goal, made some good saves, while N. Riddell, centre-half, supported the back line, which was playing short. T.O.G.’s goal came after a good run by A. Liddell, right wing, who centred for K. Mclntyre to score. Kiwi pressed consistently. The forwards combined well, and led by B. Peina, set a fast pace, but the majority of her runs weres poilt by Kiwi forwards standings off-side. Halfway through the second spell B. Peina, taking the ball from half-way, made a brilliant run and scored a well deserved goal. In the Tech. A-Tech. B game, M. Thompson again played a good game as left wing. She displayed a good understanding of the play of her inner and centre-forward and centred well. The halves shewed a tendency to hit aimlessly and waste their efforts. C. Sutherland was outstanding in the B team, but the forwards crowded and spoilt their play. A depleted Collegian team had a struggle to beat College C in a hard game. College C forwards passed well, but lacked finish in the circle. The backs, particularly M. Shearman, worked hard, and R. Check was a good left wing. Fo r Collegians I. Bartrum and B. Bignell showed excellent combination, while B. Warner played solidly on defence. Aotea, playing short, had their first win of the season against College B. K. Raurangi, left wing, made good runs, but failed to score. T. K. Kairemu, E. Tepotu and G. Nepia were outstanding players. For College, J. Glover, centre-half, played a good defensive game, while J. Prankerd was a reliable left wing. The game was even, as the score indicates. Stewart, playing short, had little chance against College A. G. Barclay, Stewart's goalie, had a busy day and saved several goals. The College’ forwards played well, but offended too oftein with ‘sticks.” R. Firmin and B. Pitkethly are deserving of mention.
