JURY FINDS SHARKEY GUILTY OF UTTERING SEDITIOUS WORDS
SYDNEY, June 20 (Reed. 10 p.m.).—Lawrence Louis Sharkey, general secretary of the Australian Communist Party, was found guilty by a jury in the Central Criminal Court today on a charge of uttering seditious words. At the request of his counsel, Mr. F. W. Paterson, Mr. Justice O’Dwyer deferred sentence pending a decision by the High Court on a Queensland case in which a submission has been made that the sections of the Crimes Act under which Sharkey was prosecuted are ultra vires. Sharkey was granted bail in his own recognisance of £lOOO and one surety of £lOOO. Sharkey pleaded not guilty to the charge.
