Abolition Of Stevedoring Commission in Australia Recommended by Cabinet
. CANBERRA, May 31 (Rec. 10.55 pm).—The Federal Cabinet decided today to recommend to the Federal Parliamentary Labour Party the abolition of the Stevedoring Industry Commission. The Government proposes to establish a board to take over the present administrative functions of the commission. The decision to abolish the commission followed a refusal of the Waterside Workers’ Federation representatives, Messrs. J. Healy and E. Roach, j to give ait undertaking to abide by 1 the lecisions of the commission and a subsequent refusal by the Federation to nominate new representatives in their places, as demanded by the Government. It is expected the board will con-1 tinue the amenities and concessions granted to wharf labourers by the commission. The waterside workers, I howevxr, will have no representation * on the board
