TELEPHONE, TELEGRAPH AND POSTAL CHARGES TO RISE IN AUSTRALIA
CANBERRA, May 31 (Recd 8 pm>. —Telephone, telegram and certain postal charges are to be increased from Is 7d, the Federal Cabinet decided today. The Government expects to get about £3,500,000 from the increases. Charges for telegrams will be increased by 50 per cent. A farthing is to be added to each local telephone call. Trunk calls are to be increased proportionately. The rate of certain categories ol second-class mail, including newspapers, is to be raised. It is understood Press telegrams will be increased by 50 per cent. Cabinet s decision will be submitted to the Federal Parliamentary Labour Party for formal ratification. Postmaster General, Senator Cam eron submitted to Cabinet a survey o. finances of the Postmaster General’s Department. Last year the postal department lost £783,000. Since then its costs had soared.
