Sydney Retail Steres Report Increased Sales
SYDNEY, May 31. —The value of sales in the chief Sydney retail stores in March was 21.1 per cent, greater than in March, 1948, ' This is 1 he largest monthly increase since April, 1948, when value rose 35.2 per cent, over that for the previous April. Electrical goods continued the high relative increases shown in previous months, with a gain of 66.1 per cent., compared with 43.5 per cent in February. The demand was for heavy eqii),)ment, such as refrigerators, electric ranges and washing machines. LISBON, May 30—One person was killed and more than 100 seriously injured when a floor collapsed as parents watched their children give an entertainment in the village school at Mesquite! (Beira). The building had been condemned by the authorities and was soon to be abandoned.
