Objection To Bill To Vary Will In Favour Of Countess Mountbatten
LONDON, May 31 (Recd 6 pm).— Suggestions have been current loi some time that a private Bill which has been promoted ' to permit Countess Mountbatten to vary the terms of the will oi her late father may be opposed by both Labour and Conservative back benchers when it reaches its second read* ing, It has even been suggested that because of this anticipated opposition the Bill may be dropped. It is understood that . the Bill will not be dropped, but that when its second reading is reached, soon after the Whitsuntide recess, objections will be notified which will entail a debate.
Chief objections to the Bill are that it confers a right on one private individual to vary the terms of a wil. when there are other individuals who are suffering from similar handicaps in dealing with estates, but who would be given no relief. The Conservatives, particularly, argue that i. a Bill on these lines is introduced al all, it should have genera' application and should not be allowed to apply to one legatee only—Specia. N.Z.P.A.
