indications That The Foreign Ministers Will Hot Be Able To Agree On German Unity
Russia Flatly Rejects West's Plan; Next Issue Is Berlin And Currency
LONDON, May 31 (Rec. 6 pm).—A deadlock was reached in the Council of Foreign .Ministers last night on the issue of Germany’s political future.
The ‘* Daily Mail’s” diplomatic correspondent in Paris says Air. Vishinsky (Russia) confirmed all predictions by rejection outright of the Western plan for creating a Federal German Government on the basis of principles now being put into practice in the Western zones. He denounced the Bonn Constitution as undemocratic, called for a return to the Potsdam agreement, and said there were big differences between the East and West, not only on what he said yesterday but on what he would say today. As the Western Powers have al-; ready turned down a Soviet demand
for re-establishment of Four-Power control, the Foreign Ministers are once again faced with failure, the “Daily Mail" correspondent says. “The Times’’ special correspondent in Paris says the general impression last night was that the Council might as well drop further discussion of German unity for their session. The Soviet Union, he points out, has clearly Ino intention of giving up political | control of the eastern zone. He adds that no doubt a day or two more will • be taken up with speeches and arguments confirming disagreement. Thereafter it is expected the council i will pass, by common consent, to the next item on the agenda, which is j “Berlin and the currency question," and here it may be able to do some business.
