CRICKETERS AT ARUNDEL CASTLE
LONDON, May 30 (Rec. 8 p.m.)— The Duchess of Kent asked the Duke of Norfolk to present the New Zealand cricket team to her when it visited Arundel Castle on Sunday afternoon at the invitation of the Duke and Duchess of Norfolk. The Duchess of Kent shook hands with every player and sympathised with Scott over his black eye, received at Oxford. The Duke of Norfolk personally conducted the New Zealanders over the castle and grounds, and with the Duchess of Norfolk, entertained them to tea. The New Zealanders also met Lord Salisbury, Leader of the House of Lords, and Lady Salisbury, who visited various rooms in the castle with I them. The older parts of the castle date back to the 11th century, and contain several of the possessions of Mary Queen of Scots, paintings by Gainsborough, Van Dyke, Sir Josuah Reynolds, and a first edition of the works of Shakespeare—one of three in England. The castle was besieged by Cromwell and the bullet holes left by his soldiers are still discernible. The Duke of Norfolk, a keen cricket, enthusiast, will watch the New Zealanders play on Monday.
