Russians Start Manoeuvres That Affect Airlift Corridor
BERLIN, May 30 (Recd. 10pm).— The Russian authorities notified the Western Powers tbday that the Russian army had started manoeuvres 75 miles west of Berlin in an area over which one of the main airlift corridors passes. The Russian controller at the Berlin air safety centre said the area would be dangerous to Western aircraft because anti-aircraft fire and Russian aircraft were supporting the ground manoeuvres.
The British authorities protested at high level, pointing out that the airlift corridor from Buckeburg, in the British zone, to Berlin passes over the manoeuvres area which was set aside for Western Allied planes by international - agreement in 1945. The Russians have proposed that aircraft normally using this corridor should skirt the area to the north, but the British and American aircrews apparently intend to hold to the normal course today.
