TWO ELDERLY PEOPLE WIN £l0,000

DUNEDIN, Saturday (PA). First prize of £lO-000 in Tattersall's has been won by a syndicate of two—Walter Heighten owner of Victoria Hotel, Dunedin, and W. A. Smith, commercial traveller for an Auckland firm. Mr Heighten is a bachelor- aged 70, and Mr Smith is a 6S-year-old widower, with a family of five, all married. In the cosy atmosphere of the back bar of th e Victoria Hotel this morning a reporter told members of the hotel staff of the win. Mr Heighten was hurriedly summoned and took the announcement philosophically—he had confidently expected it but Mr Smith, who was in his bath at the time, “almost went down the plughole with fright-’’ as he confessed later.

As excited as the winners were members of the family of the licensee, Mr W. A. Howard, who has been associated with Mr Heighten for almost 20 years. His £5OOO share of the proceeds will be spread among them, he said.
