IMPROPER PRACTICES EARN SEVERE PENALTY; WARNED OFF THE TURF
SYDNEY, May 3 (Rec. 11.5 p.m.) —The chairman of the Newcastle Jockey Club, Thomas Leslie Fines, and a committeeman, J. Abraham, were today warned off the turf during the pleasure of the Australian Jockey Club. They were charged before the A.J.C. committee with improper practices in that they approached a journalist, John Francis Harland, turf editor of the “Newcastle Sun,” concerning the price of the horse Solveig. Tn a joint statement the A.J.C. committee said it was satisfied beyond reasonable doubt that the charge had been proved. It added: “These two men occupied positions of authority and responsibility, and the offence of which they have been convicted must be regarded as most serious and one calculated to impair the confidn:ce of the community in the administration of racing.” The statement added that the committee marked its disapproval of their conduct by imposing a severe penalty.
