PLANTING TREES IN SAND DUNES HAS COMMERCE SUPPORT
Support for the Wanganui City Council in its endeavours to carry out a forestry scheme in the sand dune country between the Kaitoke Stream and the mouth of the Whangaehu River was expressed at last night’s meeting of the executive of the Wanganui Chamber of Commerce. ) Introducing the matter, Mr. S. R. McCallum said it was no good playing with the scheme. He considered the Wanganui City Council should' acquire sufficient land to put in hand ' a lull-time afforestation scheme. He | did not know, however, if the council' had any powers to carry out such an undertaking. j The council had been promised 8001 acres by the Goverment and was en-| deavouring to secure further areas which were now being grazed under I Crown lease, said the president (.Mr. N. M. Izard). Several large municipalities were already carrying out successful afforestation schemes on similar types of land, he said. The chief worry of the council at the present tim e was the delay in reaching finality with the Government in order to use the money which had been promised by Mr. C. L. Duigan.
