£600 Spent Before The Curtain Rises On “A Runaway Girl”
Cost of producing musical comedies in Wanganui, such as that which is now being rehearsed by the Wanganui Musical and Dramatic Society, ‘‘A Runaway Girl,” has greatly increased in recent years. Before the curtain rises on the first night of “A Runaway Girl,” the Wanganui Musical and Dramatic Society will have incurred expenditure in the neighbourhood of £6OO. Some few years ago, when the society was building up its assets, something more than £BOO was expended before a single penny had been taken at either the box plan or the theatre doors. “There is a demand for musical comedy among the people of Wanganui and the society is happy to meet that demand,” slid the president of the society (Mr. C S. Smith) last night; “but the expense involved emphasises how essential it is for local people to support to the utmost their □wn shows. Self expression and the development of young talent is the desire and aim of the society. It is out to foster the flesh and blood stage to the fullest extent, so long as Wanganui theatre-goers desire that we should do so.”
