CARPENTERS CALLED ON TO REJECT NEW BODY

N.Z. Union Votes No Confidence In Minister Of Labour

WELLINGTON, Last Night (PA). —A special national conference of the New Zealand Carpenters’ and Joiners’ Union, which concluded in Wellington today, issued a call to all branches of the union to take decisive action if a “scab organisation” is registered by the Minister of Labour. Mr. MeLagau.

The conference reached this decision after a two-day discussion on the carpenters’ dispute at Auckland. A vote of no-confi-dence in the Minister was also recorded. The national president of the union Mr. F. L. Langley, of Christchurch said these decisions were embodied ir resolutions adopted unanimously b] the conference. The national secretary, Mr. R. Stan ley, of Auckland, announced the re solutions as follows: — “This conference congratulates th< Auckland section of our union in oui fight for justice. We appreciate tha every move to destroy unity has, ii the main, been countered by th< solidarity of the best elements of oui union. “The conference, viewing all th< circumstances of the dispute, re affirms our decision to make avail able the whole of the resources of the union in our determination to continue the struggle to its successful conclusion. The conference condemns the action of the executive of the Federation of Labour following decisions of the National Council of the federation to give moral and financial support, and deplores the decision of the Government to cancel the registration of the Auckland section of the union. Conference condemns the action of the Minister of Labour in threatening to register a “scab” or-

ganisation under any circumstance, and recommends all members to oppose strenuously the registration of such organisation. We therefore, call upon all branches of the union to take decisive action should such organisation be registered. We express our appreciation of trade unions, trades councils and unionists for their moral and financial support rendered during the period ofj the dispute, and in view of our conference decision, call upon all workers and unions to continue financial support to ensure the success of the struggle.” The conference also adopted the following resolution: — “In view of the failure of the national executive of the Federation of Labour to convene a meeting of its National Council to pursue the carpenters’ dispute further, we ask that this matter be placed on the agenda of the forthcoming conference of the Federation. The union decided also to affiliate to the Peace and Anti-conscription Federation. A seamen’s delegate from the Canadian vessel Tridale was heard on details of the Canadian seamen’s dispute and resolutions were adopted declaring the ship “black,” condemning police interference in the dispute in Canada as strike-breaking and giving full support to Canadian seamen. Mr. Stanley said a cable conveying the latter resolution would be sent to the Minister of Labour in Canada.
