TURF BREVITIES

Smart Hurdler Night Fighter is among those in regular /work at Wingatui, and on Thursday morning he strode out well in the light exercise allotted to him. The Night Raid gelding is likely to ; play a big part in some of the betterclass hurdle events during the winter.

Sir Galloway Youngsters Among the youngsters to be offered at the bloodstock sale at Wingatui on Friday are a filly and a colt who will be offered on behalf of Mr J. J. Morris, of Wingatui. The filly is a first foal from Sweet Harmony, by Irish Lancer from Violenta, by Tea Tray from Lady Violet, and the colt is a direct descendant of Parable, whose 16 wins included the Dunedin Cup. He is from Gypsy Music, by Paladin from Controversy, by Gay Lad from Parable. Paladin sired the dams of Macedoine, Kevin, The Grate, Frances, Sal’s Pal* Pride of Mossburn, Benbecula and Fine Night.

Equator’s New Stables Equator, trained at Ellerslie since being purchased for 3000gns as a yearling at the 1946 national yearling sales, has left the stable of F. McCabe and in future will be trained by G* Henderson at Avondale. Henderson was at one time a steeplechase rider and later trained the ’chaser Waimai. Latest addition to the ranks of handicappers at Ellerslie is Ruling Master, who has joined M. E. Ritchie’s stable. Ruling Master won the Parliamentary Handicap at Trentham last July. Another new arrival at headquarters is Beau Astaire, the Beau Repaire gelding having joined H. Riley’s stable.

Waikato Riding Honours Riding honours at the Waikato meeting on Saturday were well distributed, not a single horseman saluting th e judge more than once. However, the day furnished last year’s champion, N. B. Holland, with the opportunity of registering his second success since returning to th e saddle following his accident, but the commanding lead held by W. J. Broughton, who piloted two winners at Rangitikei on Saturday, has set Holland an impossible task «this season. The Ellerslie horseman, J. Bagby, who had not been enjoying th e best of luck, followed up a win at the Pukekohe .matinee meeting by taking a division of the Puketaha Hack Handicap, and P. Brennan, who last week had linked up with H. Gray at Takanini, signalled his reappearance in the north with an immediate win in the juvenile I event- Prior to returning north, Brennan had been attached to H. Dulieu’s stable at Wanganui, and it is reported that the trainer contemplates making a transfer to Awapuni and take over th e property of that successful trainer, G. W. New, who contemplates retiring from the game.
