NOTES FROM THE NORTHERN TRACKS
AUCKLAND, Last Night tOC).— Caber Fa e went well enough in the big event at Te Rapa last week to indicate that he is a possibility on the provincial circuit in middle distance open races.
In his division of the Champion Hack Cup on Saturday the Foxton gelding Lady's Man was tailing the Held tor the first three furlongs, so his third placing indicated that he may have bright prospects in hack staying contests. Another southern hack in Bar Garrette gave a good display to beat all but Parawera in the hack mile on Saturday. The winner is a bit above I the average, and while he scored very i decisively over the Trentham colt the latter beat the remainder just as comfortably. Speartact was only narrowly beaten in the minor hack race at Te Rapa, tlie maiden Battle Rock wearing him down at the end after lie was made a bit too much use of. Both these horses can improve. Another possible improver in this division was Tamineh. whose fourth was encouraging. In the final stages of the Champion Hack Cup, Silver Dan drew right away from his opponents in the second division to pay nearly a score, while Macario, beaten into second place by five lengths, was at double figures on the plac e machine. Silver Dan has now won at his last three starts, and as he seems to be endowed with stamina his future is bright. 1 Saturday’s contest was over a mile land a-half, while his preeeding sucIcess was at nearly 11 furlongs. Silver Gull continues to disappoint in the best handicap class, another defeat going down against her at Te Rapa- Once again she ran well- for she was the leader into the home stretch, and then when the pressure was applied she wilted and finished . well back. Prior to entering the open ranks Silver Gull won a middle distance hack race under 9.7, so she has l the ability if she can only get back to her best.
Since winning over a mile and a quarter at Stratford on January 3, Hineroto has raced unluckily. At Rotorua some days ago she defeated all but Royal Beau in the Geyser Hack Cup and on Saturday she finished third in her division of the mile and a-half hack race. An early success for Hineroto may be anticipated.
