Victoria Retains Don Gilbert Memorial Tennis Cup
Winning six sets to two, and 70 games to Victoria Tennis Club retained the Don Gilbert Memorial Cup against St. John’s. Games were of a high standard but Victoria players were too strong for their opponents. Results, with Victoria players mentioned first, are:— Women’s singles: Miss P. Nettleton beat Miss D. Pithkethley 9-0; Miss J. Everett beat Miss J. Overend 9-3. Men’s singles: J. Wilson beat W. Ross 9-5; J. Treadwell beat R. Mallasch 9-4. Women’s doubles: Misses Nettleton and Everett beat Misses Pithkethley and Overend 9-2. Men’s doubles: Wilson and Treadwell lost to Ross and Mallasch 8-9. Combined doubles: Miss Nettleton and Wilson lost to Miss Pithkethley and Ross, 8-9; Miss Everett and Treadwell beat Miss Overend and Mallasch 9-4. Next week-end Victoria will defend the cup at the club’s courts against a challenge from Raetihi.
