Sport Put Before The University; Auckland Board Criticised

AUCKLAND, Last Night (P.A.)— “It appears that we are putting sport before university training," said Mr. M. G. Lee, at an Auckland Education Board meeting. Mr. Lee was commenting on the fact that in two successive items of the agenda the board had refused a woman teacher eight months’ leave of absence to attend the university to complete her B.A. degree, but had granted indefinite leave of absence to Mr. B. Sutcliffe, an assistant teacher at the Kowhai Intermediate School to enable him to travel to England with the New Zealand cricket team. “Leave of this nature has never been declined,” replied the chairman (Mr. G. K. Hamilton).

The board decided to congratulate Sutcliffe and also Mr. F. B. Smith, a teacher under the Canterbury Education Board, on being chosen for tftouring team.
