Verdict At Inquest On Young Man Fatally Injured Near Marton

A verdict that Keith Robert Lovelock, aged 17. farm hand, of Onepuhi, died as the result of multiple injuries and shock received in an accident near Marton on January 22 was returned by the coroner, Mr S. M. Dixon, when the inquest was concluded in Wanganui. Evidence showed that Lovelock was riding a motor-cycle which became involved in a collision with a motorcar. The accident occurred at the corner of Cliff Road and Tutaenui Road, and Lovelock died in the ambulance [ on the way to the Wanganui Hospital. Sergeant A. Carlyon conducted the inquest on behalf of the police. The young man was a son of Mr and Mrs G. R. Lovelock, Onepuhi. MARTON MUSICAL SOCIETY ELECTS OFFICERS. Appreciation of the ready public support given the performance of the “Messiah” in the Civic Theatre last year and the help available from persons interested in the group, was expressed at the annual meeting of the Marton Musical Society this week. It was decided to repeat the performance again in December. Stainer's "Crucifixion”is to be presented at Easter, and it was decided to commence practices immediately. It was also agreed to hold a series of evenings throughout the season, when part songs will be presented. The election of officers resulted: Patron, Dr. R. A. Church; president, Rev. Nigel Williams; vice-president, Dr. M. L. Benson; secretary-treasurer, Miss M. Middlemiss; librarian, Mrs. F. Osborne; pianist, Miss B. Stringer; conductor, Mr. O. D. Hunt; committee, Mrs. Cedric Marr, Misses L. Galloway and L. Scott. W.D.F.F. FOWLER SHOW AT TUTAENUI NEXT WEEK. Good prizes are being offered by the Tutaenui branch of the W.D.F.F. for the annual flower show to be held in the Tutaenui Hall on Thursday, February 24. Gladioli, dahias, cut flowers, decorative, domestic and sewing classes are included in the schedule. There are also sections for novices and children. In the domestic section there is a special prize of 10s for the best 3-egg sponge sandwich (no butter), filling not to be judged. Points prizes are being given in the various classes. All sponge cakes entered are to become the property of the show. Doors open at 2 p.m. and afternoon tea will be available for a small charge. MARTON JUNIOR CHAMBER OF COMMERCE The following officers were elected at the annual meeting of the Marton Junior Chamber of Commerce on Tuesday night:—Director, Mr G. Ibbett; president, Mr R. D. Howard; vlce-presinedt. Mr T. Taylor; secretary, Mr I. Bold; treasurer, Mr W. Williams; board members, Messrs N. Morgan, Chas. Marr and W. Frampton; chairman of social committee, Mr Cedric Marr; sergeant-at-arms, Mr W. V- Nicol. Although not eligible for normal membership, in appreciation of the keen and active interest taken in the affairs of the Jaycee movement in Marton. Messrs W. V. Nicol and H. V. Barnes were elected associate members. DARKTOWN FIRE BRIGADE. On Saturday night the Marton Fire Brigade carnival committee will stage another of their great novelty attractions on Marton Park in the form of a Darktown Fire Brigade display. This is a feature which has been acted in all parts of the world. It has humour and is an entertainment, new to Marton which should appeal to patrons. The carnival committee so far have given the Marton public real and novel entertainment at a very low price and is soliciting the. support of residents for their latest attractions. “Even the Bulls races cannot interfere with this novelty event bcause it is being held in the evening,” said an official yesterday. PERSONAL. Mr. J. Rankin, a missionary from Jamaica, is at present visiting Marton and is the guest of Mr. and Mrs. T. J. Mcllwaine, Russell Street. Mr. Rankin is to give an address in the Gospel Hall tonight and a further address on Sunday night. Mr. C. C. McDonald, town clerk, Marton, is attending the annual town clerk’s conference which precedes the annual conference of the Municipal Association at Napier.
