Broken Hill Iron And Steel Works At Newcastle Are To Be Closed Down
SYDNEY, Feb. 16 (Rec. G pin).—lmmediate steps are being taken to close down the Broken Hill Proprietary Iron and Steel Works at Newcastle, according to the manager, Mr. K. Butler. He said that the action was ini-! - -
perative because of the strike at; three Broken Hill Proprietary; coalmines, which was depriving the steel industry of 6000 tons of coal a day. I Because of low coal stocks immediately before Christmas the com-
• pany had to reduce operations to 40 ' per cent, capacity throughout the miners’ holidays, lasting 24 days. Since the miners resumption of work on January 1, the company’s • three mines lost more than 24,000 • tons.
The present strike relates to the status of one man employed as an electric locomotive driver, who holds a certificate of efficiency from the ) Minister of Mines, but is not. accept- ? able to the men. A lead bonus for the men on Broken I! Hill Mine work has reached a new 5 record. The figure announced for 1 March is £l3 2s 6d a week, which represents an advance of 30s.
