NATION SHOULD BE AROUSED AGAINST CRIME, SAYS PRELAIE

LONDON. Jan. 31.—The Archbishon of York, Doctor Garbett, in a York Diocesan leaf let. repeated a suggestion he made recently in the House of Lords that there should be a Stateorganised campaign against the causes of crime.

“The immediate task is to arouse the conscience of the nation to condemn, openly and uncompromisingly, dishonesty and untruthfulness, wherever they may be found and in whatever profession,' business or industry,'’ he said. “There is much confusion over moral standards, and it will be generally admitted that the difference between right and wrong has become blurred. “The proceedings at the Lynskey Tribunal show how far this has spread. There are whole masses of people beyond the reach of churches and who pay no attention to the claims of God. So ih>- State should do what, the churches cannot, do. Through the Press, the wireless, the cinema and posters it. should bring before the nation the extent of crime, it should show the loss, fear, suspicion and inconvenience caused by dishonesty, and untruthfulness. It should appeal to all to set their faces against and stamp out, petty pilfering and all underhand practices.”
