Will Take All Practicable Steps As To Defence

LONDON, Feb. 3 (Recd. 6 pm). Britain will take all practicable measures for the defence of Hongkong, said the Minister of Defence (Mr. A. V. Alexander), replying to a question in the House of Commons. The British Government was watching the situation in the Far East very carefully.

The Colonial Secretary (Mr. Creech Jones) said it would not. be in the public interest to disclose arrangements which had been made by the Colonial Government in consultation with the service authorities to meet possible eventualities in Hongkong. Mr. Creech Jones added that full consideration had been given to limiting the number of Chinese wishing to enter Hongkong in view of the difficulty of feeding them.—Reuter
