BRITAIN INTENDS TO STAND FAST IN DEFENDING HONGKONG
LONDON, Feb. 4 (Reed. 6 pm).— Britain intends to stand fast in Hongkong, and, in view of the success of Communists in China, will take all practical measures to defend the colony.
Viscount Hall, First Lord of the Admiralty, gave thi s assurance in the House of Lords last night, in replying to a debate in which anxiety about the future of Hongkong was expressed in all parts of the House. Lord Waleran wanted to know whether the Government intended to send reinforcements in view ot the virtual certainty that Communists were going to take over China.
Lord Douglas, who was in Hongkong two weeks ago, said he came away “somewhat anxious.” He did not, think there was immediate cause for alarm, but we were “pretty thin” on the ground and in the air. Viscount Hall, in his reply, added that for security reason s the Government could not disclose all the precautions they were taking, but every effort was boing made to provide the forces required.
