Three Men Charged With Robbing Elderly Chinese
WELLINGTON, Y’esterday (P.A.)— A sequel to a chase in Taranaki Street last night by a number of youths from the City Mission, was the appearance in the Magistrate’s Court, today of three men on a charge of stealing a wallet and its contents, £39 15s, from Ng You Sang, a Chinese, of Haining Street Accused were Arthur Ronald Quilter, aged 25, described as a wharf labourer; Edward Ernest Aitken, aged 33, a labourer; and Wilfred Edward Hall, alias John Lund, aged 38 a barman.
Asking for a remand until January 19, Senior Detective Calaghan said all three men were arrested following a complaint from Haining Street. While he had no objection to Quilter being granted bail, Senior-Detec-tive Callaghan said that both Aitken and Hall were at present, on bail awaiting trial or. a charge of attempted breaking and entering. It. was not. desirable that either should be again out. on bail. Counsel for Aitken said that being kept in custody would prejudice his defence. The magistrate, Mr. S. M. Colliding, said he could not see how the defence would be prejudiced and refused bail for both Aitken and Hall. Quilter was granted bail on his own recognisance of £lOO and one surety of a similar amount.
