Evatt On Australia’s External Affairs
MELBOURNE, Jan. 17 (Recd. 9.25 pm).—"ln South-east Asia and the Western Pacfic the five British Commonwealth countries, Australia, Ceylon, India, New Zealand, and Pakistan, can and should give a lead not merely to the rest of the Commonwealth, but also to the world,” said Dr. Evatt, Minister of External Affairs. “We must take greater account from the long-term British Commonwealth outlook of recent changes in Asia.” It was wrong to suggest that Australia’s dual .membership of the British Commnowealth and the United Nations were in opposition, he said. They were complementary. Another current falsification was that, the British Commonwealth was becoming weaker. The recent Commonwealth Conference slfbwed a substantial community of outlook.
