WEST COAST (NORTH ISLAND) CYCLING CHAMPS. AT MARTON

Keen competition was a feature of the West Coast (N. 1. Centre Amateur Cycing Association grass track championships, held on Marton Park on Saturday afternoon A. Sharrock, the Wanganui cyclist, won the final of the three-mile contest, with P. Bloomfield (Palmerston North) runner-up.. The honours in the one mile championship went to D. Wright (Stratford); H. Pidwell

(Wanganui) was second. Wright won his second title by giving a solid performance in the half-mile championship, winning from a good field. G. Sharrock (Wanganui) revealing his best form, won both the two-mile junior championship and half-mile junior championship. Because of a protest, the final of the half-mile senior was re-run, but Wright and Allen, who were first and second in the first race, filled similar placings in the second attempt.

In tlie track events, P. Fifield (Palmerston North) won both the 100yds and 220yds. T. Drinkwater (Palmerston North) won the 880, with J. Infield (Taihape) runner-up. G. Bromley (Marton) won the one mile race. In the women’s events Miss P. Montague (Wanganui) won the 100yds., and was placed second in the 75yds events.

The programme was carried through with a minimum of delay. An efficient loud-speaker system kept the crowd fully informed of the events of the afternoon. The attendance was small, the fixture deserving better public patronage.
