WANGANUI TEAMS WIN WOMEN’S PAIRS AND FULL RINKS BOWLING

The Wanganui Women's Bowling Centre’s pairs and full rinks tournament was concluded on Saturday when good bowling weather prevailed The morning games were played on the men’s greens at Wanganui East and the afternoon matches on the women’s greens in Somme Parade.

The fours final resulted in a win for Mesdames Rush, Turner, Johnston and Dennison (Wanganui), who beat Mesdames Edwards, Purnell, Joyce and Pluck (Wanganui), 23-21. The pairs title was won by Mesdames Dempster and Tinney (Wanganui), who beat Mesdames Dennison and Johnston (Wanganui), 24-22 in the final.

The final of the fours was marked by bowling, of a high standard and was very closely fought. A seven on the 12th. end gave Mrs. Dennison a big lead and the handicap proved too hard for her opponents to overcome On the 11th. head, Mrs. Dennison was leading 11-10 but on the next end her team sent down seven beautiful shots. Mrs. Pluck’s rink was unable to save and Mrs. Pluck essayed to drive but her shots were unsuccessful. A three helped Mrs. Pluck to regain some of the leeway and at the end of the 18th., Mrs. Dennison was leading 21-18. Mrs. Pluck scored a single on the next head but on the 20th., Mrs. Dennison was two up and led 23-19.' On the last head, Mrs. Pluck was three up but Mrs. Dennison sent down a nice bowl which reduced the score to two and made the final score 23-21 in her favour.

At the conclusion of the matches, Mrs. E. P. Allen, president of the centre, presented the prizes to the winners. She commented on the high standard of play and thanked the visiting teams for their attendance

In a semi-final of the pairs, Mrs. Dennison and Mrs. Tinney had a close call against Mrs Irwin and Mrs. Lyndall (Parnell), whose rink they defeated in a round of the fours on Friday after, an exciting match. In the pairs semi-final, Mrs. Irwin scored a single, a two and a three on the second, third and fourth heads to lead 6-1. Mrs. Dennison then scored a single and two two’s to equalise the scores. Mrs. Irwin had a slight lead until the 15th. head, when the score became 12-12. Mrs. Dennison scored a single on the 16th. but Mrs. Irwin equalised on the 17th. head. The final head was full of excitement and Mrs. Dennison scored a single by a margin of less than an inch to win the match 14-13. The final of the pairs was marked by dogged play ana a high standard of play was witnessed Mrs. Dempster and Mrs. Tinney' were slow to get going but when they settled down they put on a fine exhibition. Mrs. Dennison and Mrs. Johnson started off well and led 11-4 with seven heads gone. They continued to dominate the game and led 14-9 on the 11th. head. Mrs. Dempster and Mrs. Tinney then began to get the feel of the green again and reduced the deficit to 15-12 at the 13th. head. A five on the next head saw Mrs. I Dempster take the lead and then three singles and a four saw her lead 24-15, with three ends to go. Mrs. Dennison scored a four on the 19th. and a single on the 20th. to reduce the deficit to 24-20, but they could only get a two on the last head. Results were as follow: PAIRS Second Round: Dennison and Johnston (Wanganui) beat Fashman and Gibson (Parnell), 15-14; Dempster and Tinney (Wanganui) beat Pinfold j and Doyle (Waitotara), 23-14; Lewis and Johnson (Parnell) beat G. A. Turner and Robinson (Castlecliff), 18-10. Third Round: Irwin beat Sharpe, 29-13; Dennison beat Congreve, 1311; Dempster beat McKinstrey, 2110; Turner beat. Lewis, 14-12 Semi-finals: Dennison beat' Irwin, 14-13; Dempster beat Turner, 25-3. Final: Dempster beat Dennison, 2422.
