PROMINENT MEMBER OF LABOUR PARTY IN AUSTRALIA RESIGNS

SYDNEY, Jan. 15 (Rec. 6 pm).— Mrs. Jessie Street, wife of Mr. Justice Street, of the Supreme Court, and a prominent Federal candidate for more than 12 years, has resigned from the Australian Labour Party. She said that when she returned from Europe recently she had to choose between the Labour Party and three societies to which she belonged. and which had been banned by the party as Communist auxiliaries. The societies were the Peoples Council of Culture, the Australian Russian Society and the New Housewives’ Association. Mrs Street said she had investigated reports of Communist activities in these societies and coufd not find any evidence to support Labour Party allegations.

She was a member of the Australian —legation to the United Nations Conference in San Francisco in 1945, and in 1947 was a representative of Australia on the Commission for the Status of Women, at Lake Success.
